Ask Valorie: I don’t enjoy exercise, but I want to lose weight!

Date: Sunday, July 16, 2006
By: Valorie Burton

Q:  I am 50 lbs overweight.  I used to enjoy exercise, but I’m too tired lately.  Do you have any advice?

A: Join the club.  Many people don’t enjoy exercise, but who said that liking exercises is a requirement for doing exercise?  I’ve found that the more I am in a routine of exercising, the more I miss it when I don’t do it.  You can do it – you just have to take on a new attitude that says, “I will do it whether I feel like it at the moment or not.”  Afterwards, you’ll feel proud of yourself.

There are two approaches that will help you get into an exercise routine:

1.  Incorporate activities into your schedule that you enjoy.  What do you like to do that's active?  Activities such as swimming, hiking, softball, walking and tennis can be fun and social.  Be pro-active about finding activities that you enjoy.

2.  Secondly, you may just have to accept that you don't enjoy exercise and recognize that is not an excuse not to exercise.  Some things in life are not as enjoyable as others, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't do them.  Taking care of your body is vitally important to your health, as well as the length and quality of your life.

Make a decision today to commit to 30 minutes of exercise every other day. Change it up so that you have something different to look forward to from week to week.  You can release this weight - one day at a time.  Persevere and you will be richly rewarded!

Warm wishes,
