Q: Dear Valorie,
I am 38 years old. Do you think I am too old to go back to school? I have a loving husband of 13 years, a 9 year old son and three-year old twin boys. Please let me know. Thanks so much.
A:
I think in your heart, you already know the answer to this question, but just want some confirmation. :) Of course, I don’t think it's too late!!! The question is, what do you think? One of my family members, who is retired, recently finished a bachelor’s degree – at 54 years old. Now he’s headed to graduate school and having a ball pursuing a career he enjoys.
You have many years ahead of you. Wouldn’t it be more enjoyable if you set yourself up educationally to be able to pursue what you really want? Let go of the idea that college is 20-somethings, and recognize that your path doesn’t have to be a traditional one. It is unique to you – and you must chart your own course. It's time to follow your heart and hit the books. Here are some tips to make it easier:
1.Ask for help in managing your home life on the days when you'll be in class, make a plan and just go for it.
2.Be realistic about your schedule. Don’t overload yourself. You don’t want to burn yourself out by taking too many classes while working and taking care of a family.
3.Write down your vision. What does your ideal life look like once you’ve graduated? What will you new education give you that you don’t have right now? Be clear about your vision, it will drive you forward as you pursue your goal.
4.Have fun! If going back to school is your dream, make a decision to enjoy it. We’ve all heard the adage, “It’s about the journey, not the destination.” Enjoy your journey.
