R. Kelly brought up his challenges again while discussing the ups and downs of his career at a music conference. (Retna Ltd.)

Several years ago, R. Kelly revealed that he has struggled for years with illiteracy, and that he would dictate the song lyrics to a person he would pay to write them down.

At the recent Midwest Music Festival in Chicago, Kelly brought up his challenges again while discussing the ups and downs of his career.

"When I was trying to make it out here, I already knew, and I was stubborn about it," he said. "I don't even read really, and I'm not afraid to say that. My cousins and brothers used to tease me: 'You can't even read right.'

"How you think you're going to come up?' The only reason I graduated from grammar school is because I had a great jump shot. I went to high school, and [my teacher] told me, 'You will be one of the greatest writers of all time," Kelly recalled. "I believed. You [have to] believe it. You can't believe [anything] if you're hating. You can't achieve [anything] if you're hating."

He probably suffers from Dyslexia that has been undiagnosed. After no one ever discovering this in grade school, he gave up on reading and focused on his other talents. Hopefully, he will get****istance with his problem. It's not really funny and people would be suprised how many people suffer with this.

Ok he's admitted this, now what has he done to correct it. It's not too late for him to learn to read. And I agree w/Fworlds630, illiteracy is a major problem in our country. Sure he's made it in the music business but those teachers who just passed him b/c of a jump shot didn't help him at all.

Wow. Is that all you could take from the story Debianne? Comments like that further lets the world know where are interest lies and where our limits are. Rise above the negative implications and see that this particular struggle for R. Kelly is valid and haunts our country. Illiteracy can be helped if people were comfortable enough to expose their handicap to others. Reach out to the ones in need. Children are our future, there are many talents in our community that need to be nurtured.
The jury is no longer OUT on R. Kelly.
