ACCOUNTABLE: Making America as Good as its Promise
Category: Books
Author: Tavis Smiley and Stephanie Robinson
Publisher: Atria
"ACCOUNTABLE: Making America as Good as its Promise" promotes the power of the private citizen. "ACCOUNTABLE" informs citizens how they can help politicians deliver on their promises and make democracy active. It tells ordinary people how they can track the performances of their elected leaders and civically engage with government in ways that improve their communities.
"ACCOUNTABLE" is the logical and timely successor to two bestsellers: "The Covenant with Black America," which set forth 10 issues critical to our democracy - from health care to the economy - and challenged our public officials to address them; and "The Covenant in Action," which offered a tool kit to help everyday citizens affect change. If "The Covenant" is the “what," "The Covenant in Action" is the “how,” and "ACCOUNTABLE" is the “whether,” the yardstick for measuring whether elected officials and citizens have fulfilled or are satisfying their respective duties in our democracy.
"ACCOUNTABLE" builds upon the first two installments by acting as a timely report card to hold public officials accountable for what they have promised to date. It also endeavors to hold the entire American community accountable for its actions - an inaction - within this process.

Tavis has been and continues to be absolutely correct in his approach to politics. But, I find it mighty funny how everyone is talking about accountability and action now. Tavis was ahead of his time!

I too think that Tavis is biased and completely nonobjective in his approach to evaluating the performance of President Obama, his platform, and administration. He has been so, it seems, since then Senator Obama was absent from the S.O.B.U. (though he denies this as being a source of contention). I simply, and disappointingly, cannot consider him a reliable source anymore. If I want to read "hate" ( to use a term from the show) I'll watch Fox News. His bitterness is palpable and he is biased beyond measure. I'll save my money.

I am sorry, I have lost some respect for Tavis... I can not support or purchase anything he is part of. He has personal issues with The President, not political issues. Tavis check the man in the mirror.

Ever since Tavis Smiley was bought by the Clintons, he has been almost as spiteful as the Republican Party. He has not been on the POTUS side nor has he been helpful trying to push the agendas of this presidency. People have criticized Obama for not being strong, but it is pretty hard when you cannot get the people who voted you in to actually do their part and move progress forward. I would never buy this book or any other book by Smiley and I have no respect for him.

The question is-when your boy or your girl is $#% up-will you call them on the carpet and tell them about it? Reading many of the comments posted-if an African American has a constructive criticism of the President-then hell they are anti-Obama. I with Tavis-I happy for, voted for, and am proud that a black man is in office-now is time to hold put words into action. Turn off and stop taking up for Tiger (who doesn't even acknowledge to being black) and support a brother who has love for the black community-despite some in the black community.

i still love tavis as much as ever BECAUSE he doesn't beat the same drum that's popular. i voted for the POTUS and love him too, but i must say i am disappointed that he is not being as strong as i viewed him to be. i have no understanding about what his point is in cowtowing to the republicans and i think he needs to be held accountable for his lack of governing to the maximum. i'm not one who thought he could do everything but thought he would do something!!! forget bipartianship if nothing gets CHANGED. we the people need him to be decisive and make actual progress, his legacy will follow.

I guess the Clintons are still calling in favors from their number 1 boy - Tavis! I used to defend T Smiley, but like other Blacks, I have come to see him for what he is not - a man of our people. President Obama and his team earned our votes and now need our support. I for one will continue to give it in all forms. Let's see our so-called "leaders" do the same as we hold all accountable.

I am so done with Tavis Smily and now Corenll West. His MLK speech was nothing but a voice for Tavis and did not uplift me in any way. Oh maybe the King family for thier once a year visit to area not to see or help the people. It's all about the haves with them. He still is on the Clinton wagon (on the back). HIs stock has definately went down. Sybil you've done your favor now let move on and BYT I'd like to hear Jeff FULLTIME.

First of all, the original cover of this book did not have President Obama on the cover. Secondly, Tavis is trying to point the finger at our President.

And he educated us in a positive way. But when President Obama won the democratic nomination, it seemed as if the green eyed monster reared its ugly head in Tavis. Why wasn't a book about accountability written by him in the past with some of the other past presidents' faces on it (BUSH?!?!) I won't be buying this book. I think Tavis has become a prime example of a man exhibiting "crab in the bucket" mentality at its finest. TSK TSK Tavis!

Tavis did make a valid point or two, but his main objective in his speech to Tuskegee's students and alumnae was to derail President Obama. And to say what he "shoulda, coulda" done. Tavis made it a point to say, during the election, that President Obama shouldn't get the black vote just because he was black. Well I'd like to say that Tavis shouldn't get the black readers just because he's black. In the past, Tavis' message was always about educating the black community on politics.

Tavis Smiley was the speaker, and instead of uplifting us with an encouraging message, he chose to use his platform as a way to deter us from supporting President Obama. I found him to be very disrespectful. Whether it's the manager of McDonalds or POTUS, I'm all for holding leaders accountable. However, I don't feel that Tavis' message is coming from a place of "accountability." Simply because he never made it his focus until President Obama became a promising candidate for President.

I first learned of Tavis Smiley's disdain for President Obama when he was running for the democratic nomination during the presidential campaign. and while Tavis was a commentator on the TJMS. Since the election is over, he is no longer on the TJMS, and I don't watch his show, I thought that his envy-like rants about POTUS had stopped. Boy was I wrong. I attended the Tuskegee University Homecoming '09 last weekend and truly enjoyed myself, until I decided to attend Sunday's convocation.
